Writing Help: Commonly Misused Words & Phrases

Clean up your writing assignments by correcting these common mistakes.
  1. Got Got is an ugly word. Avoid it if possible. Use must or have instead.
  2. He/she is a clunky way to avoid gender bias in writing. Alternate he or she or pluralize (where appropriate).
  3. Orientate We never orientate, but always orient or become oriented. The same goes for administrate- we administer a project.
  4. Firstly, secondly, thirdly. Do not use the adverb forms. First, second, and third are correct.
  5. Had ought or hadn't ought. The auxiliary had is not necessary. You ought to eliminate it.
  6. Per Unless writing legalese or technical jargon, where its use is appropriate, substitute according to instead.
  7. Etc. Et cetera shows laziness. Demonstrate the opposite by providing another example to show that you could have added more.
  8. Irregardless It is not a word, so do not use it.
  9. Plus This word is not a conjunction in formal writing. Use and.
  10. Very, really, quite (and other intensifiers) Mark Twain suggested replacing these words with expletives so your editor will remove them and leave you with a better sentence. Cut out the middle man and just remove them yourself.
  11. Due to the fact that Don't you mean because? Feel free to use due to after a linking verb (The student's absence was due to illness.) If for another reason, avoid it.
